The Conservative Party is proposing limits on birthright citizenship in Canada, arguing that their approach would align with policies in other developed nations.

Currently, anyone born on Canadian soil automatically becomes a citizen.

Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner believes citizenship should only be granted to children with at least one parent who is either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.

On Tuesday, she attempted to amend a government bill to include this change, but her proposal was rejected by Liberal and Bloc Québécois members of the immigration committee.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser said he sees no need to alter Canada’s existing birthright citizenship law.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship warned that such a policy could unfairly target newcomers and contribute to growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the country.
