The BC Greens have introduced a private member’s bill that seeks to implement rent control between tenancies.
MLA Rob Botterell, representing Saanich North and the Islands, said that if the province wants to make housing affordable quickly, it should focus on the homes that already exist.
Botterell noted that BC scrapped vacancy control about 40 years ago, and since then, the province has become one of the least affordable housing markets in Canada.
The proposed bill would require landlords to apply the same rent regulations to vacant units as they do to occupied ones, but it will need the support of the NDP government to pass.
