Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and its spinoff Kenvue, the makers of Tylenol, accusing them of misleading pregnant women by marketing the drug despite alleged links to autism and other developmental disorders. Paxton claimed the companies prioritized profits over public safety, comparing their actions to “poisoning our people.”
This is the first state-level lawsuit since former President Donald Trump publicly claimed Tylenol use during pregnancy is connected to autism—an assertion that lacks scientific proof. Major medical organizations continue to state that there is no evidence Tylenol causes autism.
Kenvue rejected the allegations, warning that spreading misinformation about acetaminophen’s safety could harm pregnant women who rely on it as the safest available pain reliever. The company vowed to fight the lawsuit, citing strong scientific and medical support for acetaminophen’s safety when used as directed.
While some studies have suggested a possible link between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and developmental issues such as autism or ADHD, research remains inconclusive. A 2025 meta-analysis found a potential association but not causation, while a 2024 NIH-funded study found no link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.
