Charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was fatally shot Wednesday during an event at a Utah college, officials reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. The incident drew immediate reactions from prominent political figures, including survivors of political violence.

Footage shared on social media shows Kirk addressing the audience with a handheld microphone in the Sorensen Center courtyard, under a white tent displaying the slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.”

A single gunshot is heard, and Kirk raises his hand as blood flows from the left side of his neck. Onlookers gasp, scream, and some flee the scene.

The suspect remains at large.

Kirk’s visit to Utah Valley University marked the beginning of his nationwide college tour

He called it “The American Comeback Tour” and featured his “Prove Me Wrong Table,” where Kirk, as he did on Wednesday, sat and answered questions from students, including those who challenged his views.Over the next two months, he had planned appearances at Colorado State University, the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, Virginia Tech, Utah State University, the University of North Dakota, Montana State University, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, and the University of Mississippi.

Kirk’s death comes amid a recent wave of political violence in the United States, including the June assassination of a Democratic Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, and the May shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington.

While little is known about the shooter or the motive in Kirk’s case, experts note that political polarization and the normalization of violence have become increasingly intertwined with U.S. politics, said Kurt Braddock, an assistant professor of public communication at American University.

Braddock cited data from Princeton University’s Bridging Divides Initiative showing a gradual rise in threats and harassment directed at local officials.

President Trump posted on Truth Social that the conservative activist and his close ally died Wednesday after being shot at a college event in Utah.

“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
