Surrey – In a concerning development, Surrey has reported a total of 43 shooting incidents from January 1 to July 29, 2025, according to information provided by Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton, Senior Media Relations Officer of the Surrey Police Service in response to a media inquiry from Red FM News.

Out of these 43 cases, 21 incidents have been directly linked to extortion, marking a disturbing trend that has seen a sharp increase particularly over the past three months. During this period, multiple local businesses and private residences have been targeted with bullets fired at storefronts and homes, and demands for extortion money issued.

The situation has grown serious enough that in June 2025, the Surrey Police Service launched a dedicated counter-extortion team aimed at tackling this wave of violence. However, despite the formation of this special unit, no major breakthroughs or arrests have been made in connection to the extortion-related shootings thus far.

The recent surge has triggered widespread fear and anxiety, particularly within the South Asian community in Surrey, many of whom are reportedly the primary targets of these crimes. Community members are voicing growing concern over safety and the lack of visible progress in controlling the violence.

With nearly half a year still left, it remains to be seen whether Surrey Police will be able to curb these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice. The rising number of shooting and extortion cases will be a critical point of focus as the city moves toward the end of 2025.
