SURREY, BC – A man was killed in a shooting in a residential Surrey neighbourhood Thursday night, marking the city’s fourth homicide of 2025. Authorities believe the incident was a targeted attack.
Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers rushed to the Whalley neighbourhood, near the 10800 block of 129 Street, around 7:40 p.m. on June 26, after receiving calls about gunfire. Upon arrival, a dozen police cars and ambulances quickly cordoned off the scene.
Officers found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he died at the scene, according to an SPS press release issued late Thursday.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now taken over the investigation. In their press release, police stated, “The investigation is in the early stages, and IHIT is working in partnership with Surrey Police Service officers to complete priority tasks.” They added, “While the motive is still under investigation, the incident does not appear to be random in nature.”
This latest killing comes just two weeks after the shooting death of 56-year-old Satwinder Sharma, who was killed at his business in Fleetwood on June 11. That incident was part of a recent series of crimes linked to extortion threats targeting Surrey’s South Asian community. Police have not yet confirmed whether this most recent shooting is connected to that ongoing series of events.
It is noteworthy that this incident occurred just hours after the British Columbia government launched a campaign appealing to report extortion threats.
The provincial government Thursday launched a new campaign encouraging members of the South Asian community to report information tied to a disturbing rise in extortion threats, but some critics say the B.C. still isn’t doing enough to protect people living in fear.
Police said anyone who has information or dashcam footage regarding this investigation is urged to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
