Homicide investigators have identified the man found dead in a burned vehicle in Popkum last month.

The remains of 22-year-old Hamza Fazil of Surrey were discovered by Agassiz RCMP inside the vehicle that caught fire on July 27 in the 52100 block of Cheam Road, near Chilliwack, according to a press release from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on August 16.

IHIT released Fazil’s name to help advance their investigation. “Mr. Fazil had prior interactions with police. Investigators believe this was a targeted incident linked to the B.C. gang conflict,” said Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi in the release.

Fazil had been reported missing by family members and was last seen that same day (July 27) around 9 p.m. in the 13300 block of Old Yale Road in Surrey.

When Agassiz RCMP and firefighters located Fazil in the burned vehicle, criminal activity was suspected.

“This investigation is still in its early stages,” Dhesi said. “Investigators are working to build a timeline of Mr. Fazil’s movements prior to the homicide. We urge anyone with information about him or his activities in the days leading up to his death to come forward.”

Authorities are also asking anyone with dash camera footage from Cheam Road and Bridal Falls Road between 10 p.m. on July 27 and 1 a.m. on July 28 to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
