The Surrey Police Service’s Professional Standards Section is currently investigating an incident from earlier this month where an officer accidentally discharged their service firearm.
According to Media Relations Officer Sergeant Tige Pollock, the incident occurred on July 4. “An officer discharged their firearm. There was minor damage to an SPS service vehicle and no injuries to any members or the community,” Pollock stated.
He confirmed that the SPS Professional Standards Section is conducting the investigation and has also contacted the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner of B.C.
Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, Pollock stated he could not provide further details at this time.
Pollock added that once the investigation is complete, if the officer is found to have committed misconduct under the Police Services Act, they would be subject to disciplinary action as per the act. However, he noted that any such action would depend on the investigation’s findings.
