Surrey police are investigating two car fires that happened Sunday in the city’s Panorama Ridge neighborhood, and they believe the incidents may be linked to ongoing extortion-related threats and shootings.
Senior Media Relations Officer Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said Monday that the fires, which occurred early Sunday morning (Sept. 14) near 124 Street and 58 Avenue, are considered suspicious.
Houghton noted that accelerant was poured on the vehicles before they were set on fire. While the investigation is in its early stages, police are looking into whether the fires are connected to the recent wave of extortion-related crimes in the city.
Earlier this year, a home in the same neighborhood was the target of at least two such shootings.
The investigation comes just one day after Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and SPS Chief Const. Norm Lipinski announced a $250,000 reward fund to combat extortion-related crime.
