Mayor Brenda Locke and senior City of Surrey staff wrapped up a series of meetings in Ottawa this week aimed at ensuring federal officials fully grasp the seriousness of the ongoing extortion crisis in Surrey. The delegation met with the federal ministers of public safety and immigration, the secretary of state for combatting crime, and the prime minister to raise community concerns directly with decision-makers.

Mayor Locke said she was encouraged by the level of engagement shown by federal leaders and noted that Ottawa has signalled its readiness to work in partnership to address the violence. She emphasized that while progress is being made, the crisis is not over.

The City of Surrey is backing proposed federal legislation designed to close immigration loopholes and prevent violent offenders from remaining in the community. Locke also formally requested the appointment of a commissioner dedicated to tackling extortion-related violence and acknowledged the provincial government’s support for that request. While calling for additional specialized policing resources, she welcomed the allocation of 20 new police officers to Surrey as a positive development.

“There is still significant work to be done to stop extortions and shootings,” Locke said, adding that she looks forward to continued collaboration with federal partners to implement concrete safety measures.

In addition to public safety, the mayor and city staff also met with federal officials to discuss housing, transportation, and infrastructure priorities for Surrey.
