Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has officially announced her intention to seek a second term in the upcoming civic elections scheduled for October 2026. Speaking in an exclusive interview with RED FM, Locke ended months of speculation regarding her political future, offering a definitive “yes” when asked if she would return to the ballot. “Absolutely, I am going to run in the next election. There is no doubt about it,” she stated.
While the Mayor acknowledged that the campaign season is approaching, she emphasized that her immediate priority remains the day-to-day administration of Canada’s fastest-growing city. Locke noted that while it is currently too early for active campaigning, she expects her team to shift into full “election mode” by the summer. She further revealed that her political slate is already in the preparation phase, with formal announcements regarding candidates and platform specifics expected in the near future.
Reflecting on her tenure, Locke expressed pride in her administration’s track record and indicated that she intends to run on her previous accomplishments. She highlighted a commitment to ongoing engagement with Surrey residents to identify areas for further improvement, describing the city’s future as “bright” despite the political hurdles of the past few years. Mayor acknowledged that the next 18 months may bring significant challenges but expressed confidence in the resilience of the Surrey community.
Locke first ascended to the mayoralty in 2022 under the Surrey Connect banner, which currently holds a five-seat majority on City Council. Her initial campaign was largely defined by the high-profile promise to “Save the RCMP” and halt the transition to the Surrey Police Service (SPS). While she led a vigorous and protracted battle to retain the national police force, the British Columbia provincial government ultimately mandated the completion of the transition to the municipal SPS.
As the 2026 race begins to take shape, the Mayor emphasized her focus on economic stability, job creation, and fostering a supportive environment for residents. Observers are closely watching for a major announcement expected tomorrow from Locke and the Surrey Connect party, which is anticipated to set the strategic tone for their upcoming re-election campaign.
