A 51-year-old Surrey man is facing thousands of dollars in costs and a week without his luxury vehicle after being caught driving nearly three times the speed limit on the Alex Fraser Bridge. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, just after 8:00 p.m.
According to a report from the BC Highway Patrol, officers spotted a Lamborghini SUV traveling northbound at a speed significantly higher than the surrounding traffic. A laser speed reader clocked the vehicle at 197 km/h in a zone where the posted limit is only 70 km/h.
“Some drivers seem to think that bridges are free from speed enforcement. That is a foolish and dangerous assumption,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. He emphasized that bridges are frequently the site of deadly collisions and that driving at such speeds is “extremely dangerous” for the driver, their passengers, and the public.
The driver told officers he was in the process of showing his “out-of-country cousins” the sights of Metro Vancouver. Instead, the tour ended abruptly when the SUV was ordered impounded. The driver and his two passengers had to be picked up from the scene by family members.
The driver now faces a “pocketful of traffic tickets,” including a $483 fine for excessive speeding and a $109 fine for illegal window tints. Beyond the immediate fines and towing fees, the driver will be hit with at least three years of high-risk driver premiums and increased insurance costs, which officials estimate will bring the total financial impact to over $2,500.
The Lamborghini will remain in a police impound lot for seven days at the owner’s expense. “We’re grateful it didn’t end much worse,” McLaughlin added, noting that the passengers received a firsthand lesson in the consequences of dangerous driving rather than a scenic tour.
