Surrey City Council is set to vote tonight on a $5.3-million contract that marks a critical milestone for the development of the future Newton Community Centre. The proposed contract focuses on essential road and utility work designed to provide direct access to the site, laying the groundwork for what officials describe as a “landmark” facility for the neighborhood.

The infrastructure project includes a significant extension of 70 Avenue, stretching from King George Boulevard across the existing railway line to 138 Street. This new corridor will be equipped with modern sidewalks and dedicated cycling facilities to support multi-modal travel. Additionally, the contract covers extensive upgrades to 136B Street between 70 and 71 Avenues, which will directly front the new community hub.

Mayor Brenda Locke expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that the road upgrades are vital for safety and accessibility. “It’s exciting that we’re starting to build a road to what will be a landmark community centre in the heart of Newton,” Locke said. She emphasized that the state-of-the-art facility will eventually be a destination for residents whether they choose to drive, walk, or cycle.

The Newton Community Centre itself is designed as a modern, multi-use space that will house recreational, wellness, cultural, and library services. Strategically located south of the Newton Arena and adjacent to the Newton Seniors Centre, the facility is intended to be a highly inclusive space that caters to residents of all ages. Current projections estimate that the center will be fully completed by 2030.

Beyond immediate access, the road improvements are a key piece of Surrey’s long-term transit strategy. The project is designed to integrate with future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes connecting to the Newton Bus Exchange. Partially funded by TransLink, the infrastructure work is seen as a necessary step in preparing the Newton Town Centre for continued population growth and increased transit demand.
