The Surrey council, in its meeting on Monday night, gave the green light to plans for school sites, construction projects, and new development in the city.
School Sites Plan Endorsed
The Surrey council endorsed the Surrey School District’s eligible school sites proposal for 2026/2027.
Mayor Brenda Locke noted that it is challenging to review the reports due to inadequate school funding and severe overcrowding, but affirmed that they would support the school district moving forward. The district estimates that Surrey and White Rock will see an increase of 10,998 school-aged children over the next 10 years.
$60 Million Construction Project Approved
Surrey city council approved a contract worth nearly $60 million for the design and construction of the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre expansion in Whalley. The council approved the recommendation to award a $59 million contract to Smith Bros. & Wilson (Construction) Ltd., with a spending limit set at $61 million.
High-Rise Towers and Entertainment District
Surrey city council also approved four more high-rise towers for the downtown core, with a combined total of 168 storeys (two 40-storey and two 44-storey towers). This increases the number of approved high-rises in the City Centre.
The council amended the City Centre Plan to accommodate an Entertainment District. However, Councillor Mike Bose cautioned that the main anchor of this district, a 10,000-seat arena, “cannot be a drain on the taxpayers.” He called for a clear business plan for the arena.
