The Surrey City Council approved several major projects during a meeting on Monday night, including advancing TransLink’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) design and awarding multiple construction contracts.
The Council voted to support TransLink in advancing the King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project to the 30% design stage. This follows previous Council support in October 2023 to run the BRT line from Whalley to South Surrey.
Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized the urgent need for enhanced public transit in the rapidly growing city. “Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in the region, and our residents deserve faster, more frequent transit as soon as possible,” said Mayor Locke. “I’m proud that King George Boulevard was chosen as one of the region’s first three BRT routes. This moves us a step closer to a modern, high-frequency transit service that will cut travel times by 40 per cent between City Centre and Semiahmoo Town Centre.”
The 19-kilometre BRT corridor will feature 12 stations and include dedicated lanes along most of the route, offering fast, reliable service with an expected peak-hour frequency of every five minutes.
Additionally, the Council approved a $3.4 million contract with Crown Contracting Ltd. for intersection improvements at King George Boulevard and 108 Avenue and 148 Street and 16 Avenue
A significant contract for downtown energy piping was also approved on Monday, awarding Clearway Construction Inc. a $5.2 million contract to expand Surrey’s district energy distribution piping system.
Finally, a $33.3 million contract was approved for the construction of a third ice sheet at the Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex. This expansion will include 334 fixed seats, changing rooms and other amenities and a dedicated space for a junior hockey team.
The approvals signal a commitment to enhancing Surrey’s public transit infrastructure, improving key roadways, expanding its energy system, and upgrading recreational facilities.
