SURREY, BC – Surrey City Council has awarded a $1.7 million contract to Mar-Tech Underground Services Ltd. for the rehabilitation of deteriorating sanitary sewers in the city’s north end. The project aims to upgrade critical infrastructure and minimize disruption to residents.

The contract, specifically valued at $1,756,728.88, comes with a spending limit of $1.935 million. Work is slated to commence this month and is expected to conclude by March 2026. Construction activities will be permitted from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Scott Neuman, Surrey’s General Manager of Engineering, emphasized the necessity of the project in a corporate report to council prior to the vote. He stated that the sanitary sewers in these areas “are showing signs of deterioration and need to be rehabilitated to maintain a reliable system for conveying wastewater.”

A key aspect of the rehabilitation will involve using trenchless technology to line the inside of existing sewer pipes. This method is particularly beneficial as many of the affected sewers are located within property rear yards. Neuman highlighted that this approach “will not require any significant disturbance to streets or landscapes to minimize inconvenience to the public.”
