A local auto shop became the latest target in a series of violent extortion attempts after it was struck by gunfire overnight along the busy Langley Bypass. The Surrey RCMP’s Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) has launched a formal investigation into the shooting, which occurred in the East Cloverdale neighborhood.

The damage was discovered at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Monday (January 19), when the owner of the business, located in the 19300 block of Langley Bypass, arrived to find bullet holes in the property. Arriving officers confirmed that both the storefront and the office area sustained significant damage. Fortunately, no one was inside at the time of the attack, and no injuries were reported.

The General Investigation Unit (GIU) has taken over the case. While the investigation is in its early stages, police noted that the shooting appears to be extortion-related. This incident adds to a disturbing trend across the Lower Mainland, where commercial establishments have increasingly been targeted with threats and violence.

Investigators are currently canvassing nearby businesses for witnesses and analyzing CCTV footage to track the suspects and any vehicles involved. The RCMP is urging anyone who was traveling along Highway 10 or the Langley Bypass overnight and may have dashcam footage to come forward.

SPS Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton revealed today that the city has already recorded 34 reported extortions and 7 related shootings in the first 19 days of 2026 alone. Among the 21 victims identified so far this year, a shocking 16 are repeat victims, proving that these criminal syndicates are relentlessly pursuing their targets.
