The Supreme Court of Canada has declined to hear a case centered on the use of a thumbs-up emoji in a contract dispute.

Farmer Chris Achter’s request to appeal a ruling by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal was dismissed by the country’s highest court, meaning the previous decision stands.

That ruling determined that a thumbs-up emoji sent by Achter in response to a texted flax delivery contract from grain buyer Kent Mickleborough of South West Terminal constituted a valid signature and a legally binding agreement.

When Achter failed to deliver the flax, the company sued him for breach of contract. With the Supreme Court declining the appeal, the decision remains in effect, and costs are awarded to the grain company.
