Statistics Canada has released new population projections showing significant changes in Canada’s demographics over the next 50 years.
The projections, covering 2025 to 2075, estimate that Canada’s population, at 41.7 million in mid-2025, will continue to grow under all scenarios examined by the agency. Under a medium-growth scenario, the population could reach 57.4 million by 2075, while a high-growth scenario projects it could climb to 75.8 million. Even under a low-growth outlook, Canada is expected to see its population rise to at least 44 million by 2075.
Statistics Canada emphasized that these projections are not predictions but scenarios based on current trends and plausible future developments. They take into account demographic factors such as historically low fertility rates and changes to immigration and temporary resident policies.
The projections indicate that Ontario and Quebec will remain the most populous provinces through 2050. Alberta is expected to surpass British Columbia in population under most scenarios, while smaller provinces like Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia may see their share of the national population decline. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are projected to gain a larger share of Canada’s population over the coming decades.
