The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation voted Monday night to make the paid parking pilot program at Spanish Banks Beach permanent.
Commissioners approved the move, which will see the parking rate increase from $1 to $1.50 per hour. The price to park could also potentially rise to $2 per hour next year.
The board states that revenue generated from the paid parking pilot project has led to improved park maintenance and cleaning.
When the Vancouver Park Board first implemented the paid parking measure in May 2024, it faced resistance, and a petition garnered nearly 4,000 signatures. Many who opposed the measure at the time argued that paid parking would limit accessibility for certain individuals.
The Park Board confirmed Monday that EasyPark, a city-owned company, will be responsible for managing the parking lots at the West Side beach. Paid parking will be in effect all day, with the exception of overnight hours.
