Spanish police announced on Monday that they have dismantled a cell of “The Base,” a transnational neo-Nazi white supremacist organization classified as a terrorist group by the EU, the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to police, the U.S.-founded group operates through a loose global network of paramilitary cells seeking to carry out attacks and prepare for a future “race war.”

The investigation, launched earlier this year, identified a Spanish cell whose members were “highly radicalized” and had undergone training with “paramilitary tactics and equipment,” authorities said.

In recent months, the suspects allegedly promoted “violent actions,” even declaring they were ready to conduct targeted attacks in support of their cause.

Police said the cell’s leader had been in “direct contact” with the organization’s founder, who just one month earlier had urged “targeted attacks aimed at collapsing Western democratic institutions.”

Three suspects were arrested last week, including the leader, who remains in custody on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization, recruitment, indoctrination, terrorist training, and illegal weapons possession.

During raids in the eastern province of Castellon, officers seized two firearms, ammunition, and neo-Nazi materials.

“The Base” was created in 2018 by U.S. national Rinaldo Nazzaro as a network for extremist right-wing militants preparing for armed conflict. He later moved to Saint Petersburg and obtained Russian citizenship, according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.

The European Union added “The Base” to its terrorist list last year, imposing sanctions such as a travel ban and asset freeze.
