Search and rescue crews came to the aid of a snowboarder who went out of bounds and became trapped in a tree well on West Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain late Tuesday afternoon.
According to a North Shore Rescue (NSR) social media post on Wednesday, the snowboarder had ducked under the boundary rope and, further down the slope, stopped to remove her board. She then slipped and slid more than 100 metres down the slope.
“Members responded with rope rescue, avalanche, and winter travel gear,” NSR said. “Once on site, they set up a full rope rescue system, and a member rappelled down.”
The snowboarder was secured in a harness, attached to the rope system, and safely hauled back up the slope.
NSR noted that despite recent snowfall, many snow surfaces remain hard-packed and extremely slippery. They also thanked Cypress patrol members and lift operators for supporting the rescue, including prioritizing access for responders and assisting with logistics.
“Miraculously, she did not hit anything of consequence on the slide and only came to rest after becoming entangled in a tree root,” NSR said. The snowboarder was uninjured.
While Cypress patrol members initially reached her, they required NSR’s expertise to safely extract her from the tree well.
