B.C. Green Party interim leader Jeremy Valeriote says there have been “some difficult times and occasional disagreements” between his party and the NDP government since entering into a confidence and supply agreement.
Speaking at a briefing marking six months of the Co-operation and Responsible Government Accord, Valeriote expressed pride in what both parties have achieved together, despite challenges along the way.
The first half-year of the accord has not been entirely smooth. The Greens have openly disagreed with the government’s legislative response to U.S. tariffs, its actions on LNG, and the decision to eliminate the consumer carbon tax.
Valeriote emphasized that the purpose of the agreement was to allow the Green Party to continue playing an effective role as an opposition party while cooperating on shared priorities.
Deputy Premier Niki Sharma acknowledged that while the two parties do not always see eye to eye, progress is being made on promises related to housing, health care, and the environment.
In last year’s provincial election, the NDP secured a one-seat majority, while the Green Party holds a two-member caucus.
Under the terms of the accord, the Greens are required to support the NDP in confidence votes, but are free to take independent positions on any policy or legislative matter not outlined in the agreement.
