Sikh organizations are planning to continue their protests today in Calgary against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at the nearby G7 Summit.
The advocacy group Sikhs for Justice held a full day of protests yesterday, Monday, as Modi arrived at Calgary International Airport and then proceeded to the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. The demonstration featured posters depicting the leader handcuffed, in a prison jumpsuit, and another showing him behind bars.
Modi’s visit is being met with strong opposition from Sikh separatist groups, particularly after the RCMP accused Indian agents of involvement in extortion and murder during the investigation into the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Relations between Canada and India have been strained since former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the RCMP alleged the involvement of Indian agents in the assassination of Nijjar.
Nijjar was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey.
