Three Sikh organizations are holding a town hall in Surrey on Sunday to address the ongoing extortion crisis. The event description states that “Indian transnational repression and coordinated extortion targeting Sikh communities in Canada have reached a crisis level. Families, businesses, and community members are facing intimidation, threats, and violence that no Canadian should have to endure.”
The federal public safety minister says the government is taking all possible steps to respond to the surge in extortion cases in the Lower Mainland. “The issue of extortion is deeply troubling, but we are putting every resource on the table to ensure the safety and security of Canadians,” Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said on Nov. 28.
According to the Surrey Police Service, as of Dec. 11 there have been 106 extortion-related files, 44 extortion-linked shootings, and 76 unique victims in 2025.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada, the Sikh Federation, and the British Columbia Gurdwaras Council are organizing the town hall at the Civic Hotel (13475 Central Ave.) from 1 to 4 p.m. Similar sessions will take place in Brampton, Ont., and Calgary. Local elected officials are expected to attend.
The event is free, but organizers are asking people to register in advance. Anandasangaree previously attended a large roundtable in Surrey in late November with Secretary of State for Combating Crime Ruby Sahota, B.C. Premier David Eby, and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke to discuss improving the response to extortion threats and support for victims.
