Seven obstetrician-gynecologists at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C., have resigned their in-hospital privileges under the Interior Health authority.

Dr. Mark Masterson, Interior Health’s vice-president of medicine, confirmed the resignations — which involve the entire department — but assured the public that obstetrics and gynecology services at the hospital will continue without interruption.

The decision was outlined in an Oct. 11 letter sent to local health care providers. The doctors cited ongoing safety concerns, heavy workloads, and long-standing recruitment challenges as reasons they could no longer safely continue providing in-hospital care without stronger support from Interior Health and the provincial government.

The letter also expressed disappointment over what the doctors described as inadequate provincial support for women’s health and said they were “devastated” to reach this point. While stepping back from hospital work, many of them plan to continue offering outpatient gynecology services in the community.

Interior Health said it has been working for years to support the department, including improving access to operating rooms, developing specialized clinics for various risk levels, and recruiting new physicians. Masterson called the resignations “disappointing,” noting that progress had been made in addressing several of the doctors’ concerns.

He said the health authority is creating a transition plan to maintain patient care and will inform the public of any future service changes. Patients on surgical waitlists will be contacted directly, and urgent care at Royal Inland Hospital remains available.

Masterson emphasized that the hospital remains open and that Interior Health is working to ensure uninterrupted women’s health care for the Kamloops region now and in the long term.
