One person was killed following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1 on Monday morning. The crash, which occurred near the 176th Street exit, led to significant traffic disruptions and the closure of westbound lanes for several hours.
According to BC Highway Patrol, emergency calls began coming in at approximately 7:15 AM. Preliminary investigations suggest a devastating sequence of events: a vehicle traveling in the eastbound lanes reportedly crossed the median into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision involving three vehicles in the westbound lanes.
BC Highway Patrol Cpl. Michael McLaughlin confirmed that one person has died as a result of the crash. While initial reports indicated serious injuries and the presence of emergency personnel for medical assistance, the situation was later updated to a fatal investigation.
While the highway was initially closed in both directions to allow for emergency response and helicopter access, eastbound lanes have since reopened. However, the westbound lanes remained closed throughout the morning to allow collision reconstruction teams to analyze the scene.
Commuters are still being advised to check DriveBC.ca for real-time updates and to seek alternative routes to avoid heavy congestion.
The BC Highway Patrol is urgently seeking witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage of the collision or the driving behavior of the vehicles involved prior to the crash.
“We are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. He also issued a plea for public sensitivity, urging people to refrain from posting photos of the wreckage on social media out of respect for the families of the victims.
Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact the BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby office at 604-526-9744 and quote file number 2025-4185.
