Despite repeated warnings from BC Highway Patrol about increased enforcement on Highway #99, over 60 vehicles were impounded for speeding or impaired driving in the last week of August. Thirty-one of those impounds occurred over the Labour Day Weekend alone.

Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol stated that too many people are still driving at incredibly high speeds or under the influence on the Sea to Sky highway. He added that while it’s hard to believe, officers are still catching people doing both at the same time.

On August 27, a BC Highway Patrol motorcycle clocked a 29-year-old Vancouver man driving a blue pickup truck at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Porteau Cove. The driver was given a breathalyzer test, which resulted in two “warning” readings for alcohol impairment. As a result, he received a 3-day driving suspension, a $368 fine for excessive speeding under Section 148(1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, and a 7-day vehicle impound at his own expense. In addition, he will face a minimum of three years of high-risk driving premiums, which are expected to bring the total cost of fines and fees to nearly $2,500.

Corporal McLaughlin warned that traffic patterns and volumes are changing with the return to school, and weather and darkness are becoming more significant factors each day. He urged drivers to slow down, allow more time for their commute, and stay sober.
