Richmond, B.C., police say scammers are targeting the city’s Chinese-speaking community with fake job advertisements.
Simplified Chinese posters offering positions such as house-sitter, caregiver for the elderly, and “tea leaves packager” have been appearing on light posts around the city, Richmond RCMP stated in a news release on Friday.
“The posters include a brief job description and a contact phone number,” police said.
“Investigators believe these posters may be used to collect personal information, which could identify potential scam victims.”
Mounties reported that someone who responded to one of the posters was later persuaded to make an investment that turned out to be fraudulent.
“We want to remind everyone to exercise caution when responding to anonymous or unverified job postings,” said Cpl. Melissa Lui.
“People should also be aware of the tactics scammers use to obtain personal information for fraudulent purposes. As a general rule, do not share personal information with unverified sources.”
Police urged job seekers to be diligent when applying for positions and never provide personal information without first verifying the legitimacy of the employer.
“Watch out for upfront fees or fake cheques,” the release added. “Legitimate employers will not ask you for money in advance or request that you deposit a cheque into your account and send funds back later.”
Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by fraud is advised to report it immediately to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Richmond RCMP said.
