About 780,000 Ryobi pressure washers sold at retailers such as Home Depot are being recalled in the U.S. and Canada due to a risk of projectiles that has caused fractures and other injuries.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday that TTI Outdoor Power Equipment is recalling specific Ryobi electric pressure washer models because their capacitors can overheat and explode, “causing parts to be forcefully ejected.” This presents a serious risk of injury to users or bystanders.
So far, the CPSC has received 135 reports in the U.S. of overheating capacitors, including 41 explosions that caused 32 injuries or fractures to consumers’ fingers, hands, faces, and eyes. Health Canada noted that no additional incidents have been reported in Canada.
Owners of the recalled pressure washers are urged to stop using them immediately and visit Ryobi’s recall website to obtain a free repair kit, which includes a replacement capacitor.
The affected models are RY142300 and RY142711VNM, with roughly 764,000 sold in the U.S. and 16,000 in Canada. In the U.S., the washers were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet between July 2017 and June 2024, priced around US$300–$400.
TTI Outdoor Power Equipment is a subsidiary of Techtronic Industries (TTI). The Associated Press contacted the company Thursday for comment.
Earlier this year, TTI also recalled other Ryobi products, including mowers and hedge trimmers, due to fire and laceration hazards, respectively.
