A joint police operation in Richmond to launch Distracted Driving Prevention Month resulted in 120 tickets for drivers using electronic devices and about 40 additional offences on March 5, 2026.

More than 6,300 vehicles passed through five enforcement locations during the single-day campaign, which involved Richmond RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, and the Vancouver Police Department, along with community policing volunteers. Volunteers also issued 92 warning letters to drivers observed using their phones.

Police say distracted driving is the second-leading factor in fatal crashes in B.C., contributing to an average of 80 deaths and more than 4,800 injuries each year. In B.C., using a phone while driving carries a $368 fine and four penalty points.

Officials say the coordinated enforcement effort highlights the importance of partnerships and continued awareness to reduce distracted driving and improve road safety.
