A governance committee report reveals that Surrey residents believe the biggest threats to public safety are, in order: violent crime, organized crime gangs, and intimate partner violence.
The report, which is being presented to the Surrey Police Board today, is based on community consultations from 2024 and 2021. It notes that 81% of participants identified violent crime as their top concern, followed by organized crime gangs at 75%, and intimate partner violence also at 75%.
The report states that while “people generally feel safe” in most areas of the city, there are some specific locations where residents, particularly women between 18 and 24, feel unsafe walking alone.
Less concerning to residents were non-violent property crime at 66% and road safety at 43%.
To address these issues, the report indicates that residents want to see more Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers in the community, along with more early intervention and prevention programs like Block Watch, Speed Watch, and School Resource Officers.
The governance committee’s goal is to help the board set the SPS’s priorities to reduce threats and enhance the “feeling of safety” for all residents.
