The operator of the Red Chris mine in British Columbia reports that three trapped workers are currently behind a wall of debris that’s between 20 and 30 meters long and seven to eight meters high.
A statement from Newmont Corp. indicates they are using a remote-controlled scoop, brought in from the nearby Brucejack mine, to begin removing the debris and restore access to the trapped miners.
The company’s statement assured that the refuge chamber where the workers are located is not in the same area as the rockfalls that trapped them. It’s understood to be stable and well-ventilated.
Specialized drones have been deployed to assess the underground geotechnical conditions. Teams are also working to restore the specialized communication system to re-establish contact with the workers.
The workers became trapped on Tuesday following two separate rockfalls. Newmont Corp. has confirmed that the miners have sufficient air, food, and water for an extended stay, though their communication was cut off after the second cave-in.
