A new report from the Movember Institute of Men’s Health reveals that 44% of men in Canada die prematurely, defined as before age 75. In 2023 alone, nearly 75,000 men died early, with the leading causes being cancer, coronary heart disease, accidents, and suicide. Suicide was the fourth leading cause, and three out of four suicide deaths in Canada were men.

The report emphasizes that many of these deaths could be prevented through lifestyle changes, improved mental health support, and access to healthcare. Indigenous men and those in vulnerable communities are especially at risk. Long-standing issues such as stigma, gender bias, and low health literacy often prevent men from seeking timely medical or psychological care.

The report recommends using sports to promote health awareness, improving mental health literacy in schools and workplaces, and ensuring healthcare providers focus directly on men’s primary concerns to encourage engagement. Early intervention, rather than self-coping or substance use, is essential to reducing these risks and improving men’s overall well-being.
