As Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday to repair strained bilateral relations, a bombshell report from The Globe and Mail has introduced fresh friction. Citing two unidentified officials, the prominent Canadian newspaper claims that security authorities have uncovered evidence suggesting Indian consulate staff in Vancouver allegedly assisted in the 2023 assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

According to the report, a visa officer stationed at the Vancouver consulate was purportedly a covert operative for India’s intelligence agency, RAW. It is alleged that this official used his position to gather critical intelligence on Nijjar by leveraging contacts within the Indian community in Surrey, British Columbia.

The report further claims that this gathered intelligence was transmitted to another official in New Delhi, Vikash Yadav, who then allegedly funneled the information to members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to carry out the hit. Canadian officials stated these claims are supported by investigations conducted by the RCMP, CSIS, and intelligence partners in the U.S. and the U.K.

The allegations revisit the diplomatic crisis that began after Nijjar was gunned down on June 18, 2023. Following the incident, then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first brought the claims of Indian state involvement to the House of Commons.

In response to the latest report, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik has categorically denied the accusations, stating that such activities never occurred. However, a concurrent report by The National Post notes that Canada’s intelligence agency, CSIS, continues to classify India as a top source of foreign interference in Canadian affairs.
