According to Statistics Canada, the number of employed people primarily working from home has decreased for the fourth consecutive year.
The agency reports that in May, 17.4% of employed people worked mostly from home, down from 18.7% in May 2024. The number of people working exclusively outside the home rose to 77.6% this May, up from 76.6% a year earlier. Meanwhile, hybrid workers—those who work both at home and in the office—increased slightly from 4.8% to 5.1%.
As remote work declines, more Canadians are commuting. The percentage of commuters primarily using a car, truck, or van to get to work dropped slightly from 81.5% to 80.9%. At the same time, commuters using public transit increased from 11.4% to 11.9%, and those walking or cycling to work rose from 6.0% to 6.2%.
