Fewer than a dozen properties in Abbotsford remain under evacuation order after the city downgraded 25 properties in the Sumas Prairie area to evacuation alerts on Tuesday.
The city says 11 properties are still under evacuation orders, while 474 are now on evacuation alert. The remaining orders apply to properties on Angus Campbell, Kenny and York roads, according to Abbotsford’s interactive map.
Residents on evacuation alert are being urged to stay ready to leave on short notice if conditions change, the city said in an afternoon update.
Authorities have been carrying out rapid damage assessments on homes affected by flooding that began last week. Of the properties downgraded from evacuation order to evacuation alert on Tuesday, nine were rated “green,” allowing re-entry, while six were rated “yellow,” meaning access is restricted under certain conditions.
The city noted that assessments were limited to the exterior of homes and did not include interiors or other structures such as sheds or barns. Officials recommend residents arrange further inspections through their insurance providers after returning home, and say resources and guidance are available on the city’s return-home information page.
Several roads in the Sumas Prairie area remain closed, and drivers are being asked to follow traffic control measures and avoid the area if possible. Details on road closures are available on the city’s website.
