North Vancouver RCMP is advising the public of a substantial amount of illicit tobacco seized from a residence during the course of an investigation. In February of 2025, North Vancouver RCMP launched an investigation after observing suspicious activity consistent with the sale of illicit tobacco near a business in the 1500 block of Lonsdale Avenue.
Following an investigation spanning several months, officers executed a search warrant on May 15 at a residence in the 700 block of West 20th Street. During the search of the residence, officers seized large quantities of illicit tobacco from numerous brands with fake stamps and approximately $5,000 in cash. It is estimated that 104 full cartons and 247 single cartons were seized.
One suspect has been identified during the course of the investigation and has been arrested. He has been released pending court at a later date.
“The sale and purchase of illicit tobacco is illegal, unsafe, and often linked to organized crime, including drug and weapons trafficking,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “It’s not something people always think about when they buy illicit tobacco, but these purchases have real consequences and help fund serious criminal activity.”
“Illicit tobacco doesn’t just hurt legitimate businesses, it also deprives communities of tax revenue that funds important public services like health care and education,” added Corporal Sahak. “On top of that, the products are unregulated, often of poor quality, and can pose added health risks to users.”
In Canada, the possession, sale, or distribution of illicit tobacco is a serious offence under both federal and provincial laws. Anyone caught committing this offence may face significant fines, seizure of property, and even jail time. Under the Excise Act, 2001, and section 121.1 of the Criminal Code, individuals convicted of selling unstamped tobacco can face fines up to five times the amount of federal tax evaded and imprisonment for up to five years.
North Vancouver RCMP is working closely with partner agencies to help further this investigation.
