Authorities say they cannot confirm reports that Rabih “Robbie” Alkhalil — a convicted murderer who escaped a B.C. jail three years ago — has been arrested in Qatar.
At a news conference Monday, the RCMP said the reports have not been verified.
“If that information changes, we will update you accordingly,” a spokesperson said, adding that “at this point Rabih Alkhalil remains at large.”
Mounties also announced charges against three men accused of helping Alkhalil escape the North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre in 2022. The suspects face counts of conspiracy to commit prison breach and prison breach.
Alkhalil’s jailbreak in July 2022 involved two men, posing as contractors, who allegedly helped him flee. Following his escape, he became the top target on the BOLO program’s list of Canada’s 25 most wanted fugitives, and he remains ranked third, with a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest.
At the time of his escape, Alkhalil was on trial for the 2012 murder of Vancouver gangster Sandip Duhre, who was shot dead inside a busy downtown restaurant. He was later convicted of that killing in absentia.
Alkhalil was also among four men convicted in the 2012 Toronto patio execution of Johnny Raposo, who was shot four times in the head. He had been extradited from Greece to face trial in that case, and in 2017 he and the other three men were sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 25 years.
