One year after a serious assault, RCMP officers in Surrey are renewing their appeal to the public for help in locating the accused.

On August 2, 2024, at 1:10 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of a serious assault in the 10200 block of City Parkway. Frontline officers attended the scene and found the victim, who had suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. On August 9, 2024, Surrey RCMP identified the suspect as 33-year-old Kalid Yimer.

In a media statement today, police said that investigators with the RCMP SPOSU Major Crime Unit are pursuing all investigative avenues to locate and arrest Kalid Yimer. An extensive investigation has been conducted, and investigators are continuing to examine a possible motive for the incident. However, they do not believe this was an attack motivated by either religious or political ideology.

Police are re-appealing to the public to remain on the lookout for Kalid Yimer and to call 9-1-1 immediately if you see him. Prior to the incident, Kalid Yimer was known to work day-labour jobs. Investigators are asking anyone who posts job ads or hires people for odd-jobs to familiarize themselves with Kalid Yimer’s photo and be aware of him. Kalid is believed to be in the Lower Mainland area and is known to have ties to Toronto and Calgary.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Kalid Yimer, who is facing one charge of attempted murder under section 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
