RCMP laid charges in April 2024 firearms incident which led to hotel evacuation

Richmond RCMP has announced that multiple charges have been laid against an individual in connection with a firearms incident in April 2024 that led to the evacuation of a hotel.

Following the incident at the hotel, police recovered four assault-style rifles and a loaded handgun from the accused.

Richmond RCMP, with the assistance of the Integrated Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (LMD IERT), had arrested the suspect without incident in the 3000 block of St. Edwards Drive.

Arshdeep Singh Bassi now faces five criminal charges with multiple counts. These include possession for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, as well as unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Chief Superintendent Dave Chauhan, Officer-in-charge of Richmond RCMP, said the coordinated efforts involved in the investigation. “I commend the coordinated efforts of all officers and support personnel involved in this investigation,” he stated. “From the first responding Frontline officers to the specialized teams who conducted the arrest and subsequent investigation, their professionalism and diligence ensured public safety during a high-risk incident. Our priority is always the safety and well-being of the community, and this case highlights the strength of our integrated policing approach.”

Bassi was arrested and remains in custody until June 13, 2025.
