One of British Columbia’s top RCMP officers has been charged with multiple off-duty assaults, prompting the appointment of a special prosecutor.

The BC Prosecution Service says Assistant Commissioner David Teboul, the RCMP’s Pacific Region commander, faces charges of assault and assault by choking against one individual, as well as a separate assault charge involving another person.

According to a news release, the charges stem from alleged incidents in Abbotsford on July 2 and were formally laid in provincial court on Thursday. Teboul is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Oct. 9 in Abbotsford.

To prevent any “real or perceived improper influence” on the proceedings, the prosecution service appointed Vancouver lawyer Andi MacKay as special prosecutor on Aug. 20.
