Questions are being raised over excessive overtime pay within the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) after a CBC News report revealed that a single Sergeant was paid $239,258 in overtime last year—more than double the rank’s top base salary of approximately $158,000.

The figure, obtained through a freedom of information request, highlights a growing three-year trend where a rising number of officers are earning double or more than their regular salaries by working extra hours. This comes as the VPD continues to exceed its operational budget by millions of dollars.

“That is a bit eyebrow raising and I think it deserves a few answers,” stated Green Party Councillor Pete Fry.

The data also revealed the broad scope of the issue, in 2024, seven Constables were paid more than $140,000 each in overtime, doubling their top salaries.

A total of 47 VPD officers received $100,000 or more in overtime during the same 12-month period. This number is a fourfold increase from the 11 officers who reached that threshold in 2022.

The VPD is expected to run over budget for the second consecutive year, with overtime being cited as the main driver for the overages in both years.
