The Quebec government has announced plans to ban religious symbols in the province’s daycare centres.
Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge stated there is a “broad consensus” among Quebecers in favor of strengthening secularism.
The move comes after a committee this summer recommended extending the ban to daycares as part of efforts to enhance secularism. Quebec already prohibits public sector workers in positions of authority, such as teachers and judges, from wearing religious symbols while on duty.
Roberge noted that the new legislation will exempt current daycare employees. The government has also introduced legislation to apply the religious symbols ban to all public school staff and has pledged to prohibit prayer in public spaces.
