The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has presented a resolution in the state assembly, demanding a ₹20,000 crore flood relief package from the central government.
On the first day of the two-day special session called by the Punjab government, a resolution was passed against the central government’s “insufficient, belated, and undisbursed relief package.” The resolution also condemned the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for not responding to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s repeated requests for a meeting.
The resolution was moved by Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal, who stated that the floods were the worst in Punjab’s history. He added that the lack of a response from the PMO prevented the state from presenting a proper and comprehensive account of the full scale of the disaster.
The resolution expressed “profound dismay” at the central government’s announcement of a token relief package of ₹1,600 crore, calling it a cruel mockery of the state’s genuine demand for over ₹20,000 crore for a full recovery.
The resolution urged the Union government to acknowledge the gravity of the disaster, reassess the damages, and sanction a comprehensive and substantially enhanced special financial package of no less than ₹20,000 crore to support farmers, rebuild ruined infrastructure, and restore the livelihoods of the people of the state.
It is worth noting that Punjab faced its worst floods in decades, triggered by swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers and heavy rainfall. The floods affected 2,300 villages, resulted in 59 deaths, and caused damage to crops on nearly five lakh acres of land.
