A section of Whalley was behind yellow tape as Surrey Police blocked off the area on Monday afternoon following reports of gunfire. The shooting took place just after 3 pm at Gateway skytrain station and police station located in the area of 107 avenue and King George Blvd.
Surrey Police Service spokesperson Sgt Lindsey Houhgton said, “One suspect has been arrested with the help of the heavily armed Integrated Emergency Response Team. No injuries have been reported at this time. The area is closed for pedestrian and vehicle traffic has been halted near King George Boulevard and 107 Avenue. We urge the public to avoid the area while officers respond to the situation”.
This marks the fourth shooting reported in Surrey on Monday. At approximately 2:20 am, shots were fired at the Ustaad G 76 Indian restaurant located in the 2100 block of King George Boulevard. Investigators believe the shooting may be connected to an ongoing extortion ring. Then again in the afternoon, Newton location of Ustaad G restaurant was targeted which is located at 130 street and 76 avenue. Police, however, have not shared details about this incident.
Shortly earlier, at about 2:00 am, RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) officers responded to calls of shots fired at a residence located in the area of 10700 block 141 Street. Officers confirmed that damage to the exterior of the residence had been caused by gun shots. Several people were inside the residence at the time and there were no injuries. At this early stage the motive for the shots fired remains under investigation and no links to extortions have been made.
