The B.C. government has launched a public awareness campaign to combat the ongoing wave of extortion and violence affecting South Asian residents and businesses.

B.C. Solicitor General and Minister of Public Safety Garry Begg, along with BC Crime Stoppers Executive Director Gillian Millam, announced the start of the 60-day campaign during a press conference on Thursday afternoon. The campaign, which began the same day, has a budget of $100,000 and aims to educate the public on how to recognize and report extortion threats. Officials hope the campaign will help protect individuals, families, and business owners by keeping them informed and prepared.

“The recent rise in extortion threats targeting the South Asian community is deeply troubling,” said Begg. “We are fully committed to supporting police in their investigations and putting an end to these crimes.”

The campaign will be conducted in both English and Punjabi and will feature advertisements across various platforms, including radio, podcasts, Spotify, social media, and television.
