Protests as three suspect accused in Nijjar murder, appeared in Surrey, B.C. court

The three suspects charged in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar appeared by video in Surrey provincial court today, the court room was full and dozens of Sikh community members were protesting outside court, carried placards, Khalistan movement’s flags and signs honoring Nijjar and bearing the face of three suspects.  

Kamalpreet Singh (22), Karanpreet Singh (28), and Karan Brar (22) have been charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in Surrey on June 18 of last year.

Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh will make their next appearance in Surrey court on May 21 at 9:30 a.m. by video.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, an advocate for an independent Sikh homeland and president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was shot dead in his pickup truck while leaving the Surrey temple’s parking lot last June.

In September 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there was credible intelligence that India’s government was involved, which India denies.
