Dozens of protesters gathered outside Vancouver’s Indian consulate on Wednesday as demonstrators marked the second anniversary of the assassination of B.C. Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, many expressed concerns over Canada’s renewed diplomatic engagement with India — a country whose agents have been linked by police to Nijjar’s 2023 killing.
Moninder Singh, spokesperson for Sikh Federation Canada, called it “frustrating” to see Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the G7 summit in Alberta this week, where he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“India remains a significant actor in foreign interference and transnational repression,” Singh said. Singh noted that India has offered no cooperation in the Nijjar case and warned of continued issues involving extortion, violence, and threats against Canadians, particularly those of South Asian descent.
He said Nijjar’s assassination outside the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, where he served as president, has galvanized the Sikh community over the past two years. Singh added that he and other Sikh activists have been warned by Canadian authorities about threats of “imminent assassination,” making Modi’s presence at the summit deeply troubling for those facing possible state-sponsored violence.
The RCMP has stated that credible evidence links Nijjar’s killing to agents of the Indian government. Four Indian nationals have been charged with first-degree murder, and court proceedings are underway.
