SURREY, B.C. – British Columbia’s provincial insurance agency, ICBC, and its animal welfare society, the SPCA, are jointly urging drivers to take precautions to protect their pets during summer road trips.
In a shared statement, ICBC and the provincial SPCA emphasized that a crash-tested harness or a firmly anchored hard-shell crate can prevent serious injuries to both pets and people inside a vehicle during a collision.
They advise that pets are safest when secured in the back seat or cargo area of a vehicle, stressing that they should not be on a passenger’s lap. The organizations also caution against a common practice: “While it’s tempting to let your dog hang its head out the window, this can lead to eye injuries due to weather, heavy wind or debris.”
